Send me an email to set up a time. See me or your LAB or REC instructors for help.
Click for the
which includes all the information about the course schedule, homework assignments, etc.
You may want to try the following 7-question
(solution on the second page) to make sure you remember some basic
concepts and ideas from General Physics I,
that you will need in this course.
To get a list of tutors or see help room information, go to the
physics department web pages related to teaching information.
The recommended text is the
OpenStax College Physics text,
which is available in several formats for free, click the link to find out more. A recommended reading schedule
in this text is listed in the Spring 2021 PHYS 114 Course Syllabus .
I also like to use the text Physics: Principles with Applications by D.C. Giancoli for reference.
There are many others that would have similar explanations of the topics we cover in this course.
The homework is submitted online at www.saplinglearning.com .
A group-work problem on paper is being worked on and collected in each recitation class.
See the syllabus and attend recitation for those details.
See the following
Guide to Solving Physics Problems
for some pointers on how to approach homework and exam problems: how to list the knowns and unknowns,
see what concepts to apply, manipulate the equations needed, and generally, how to organize your
solutions and get the right answers with correct units. Includes the basic outline of how to write
out the "Show work" homework solutions that you will hand in during recitation classes.
Lecture Notes
Here I've summarized the main topics, formulas, and notes from each day's lecture.
Make sure you know what to do with the formulas, concentrate on the meanings of the
symbols, etc!!
Try to understand the examples, they may help with
the homework problems.
You can also refer to somewhat shorter summaries of the topics on the
Phys 114 recitation web page.
But, you'll find much more complete explanations in the texts by OpenStax or Giancoli.
These lectures (remotely in CW 103) start on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, and take place on
Tuesday-Thursdays thereafter.
All the recitations take place on Wednesdays every week via Zoom, see your link in Canvas.
The labs take place on Fridays and Mondays almost every week via Zoom, find your link in Canvas,
and see the syllabus for the schedule.
The exams take place on Mondays startig at 5:30 p.m via Zoom, except for the final, see syllabus.
