K-Staters contribute to DUNE collaboration that finalizes the blueprint for the ultimate neutrino detector

K-State physicists Tim Bolton and Glenn Horton-Smith are part of the editing team that released the 2000 page Technical Design Report for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). Bolton served as the overall co-editor with physicist Sam Zeller of Fermilab. A third K-Stater, retired K-State Department of English instructor Nora Ransom made key contributions to the document. Ransom, who taught expository writing, technical writing, and scientific writing for decades, worked as a copy editor with dozens of DUNE collaborators from universities and laboratories across the globe to help transform raw technical descriptions from scientists and engineers into readable prose.

Ransom was diplomatic in her assessment of her writers, repeating a quote from Dene October of the University of the Arts, London who said, “A good editor is someone who cares a little less about the author's needs than the reader's.”
