A Physicist Looks at Detector Engineering

November 14, 2011

The field of detector engineering encompasses light sensitive instruments from ultraviolet to infrared. There are very few universities in the world that offer a degree in detector engineering. So I describe how one physicist gravitated to this field. I provide an introduction to a variety of detectors: time projection chambers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, infrared detectors at the Naval Research Lab and visible focal plane arrays at Ball Aerospace and Technologies
Corporation.
