The End of an Era
Math/physics library closes its final chapterA fixture in Cardwell Hall for almost 60 years, the Math/Physics branch library permanently closed its doors in December. Established in 1963 with the building's opening, this 2,400 square foot space played a vital role in providing resources and research materials through its extensive collection of books and journals. At the time, it was considered one of the most modern and complete facilities for teaching and research in physics in the area.
On December 11, the Math and Physics departments celebrated and thanked the library staff, inviting the dedicated librarians and students who have been integral to our teaching and research community for many years. Their contributions have been essential in helping fulfill our department missions.
Felisa Osborn, who was our current branch librarian at the time, was present along with a few of her student employees. Felisa regretted that the branch in Cardwell was closing prior to her retirement this summer. Barbara Steward and Sue Pray, former librarians, were regrettably unable to attend.
Although the remaining reference materials in Cardwell Hall were moved to Hale, the main library, they are easily reachable for those needing materials that are not downloadable. However, even in this digital age, we find ourselves missing the familiar presence of the library and especially its staff.
While the traditional library space in Cardwell Hall is gone, it has been reimagined and revitalized and is now home to the Quantitative Learning Center. The "Q-Center" is a dynamic hub offering students a fresh (and free) approach to academic support for K-State students enrolled in math, physics, and statistics undergraduate courses. This transformation allows us to provide personalized, hands-on assistance, moving beyond traditional resources to a collaborative learning environment.
